When Phil first picked up a pair of sticks at the age of seventeen a drummer was born.
After playing in a few bands, his potential was recognised in 1969 with 'Anubis' - a rock/blues combo who were one of the Midlands stalwarts. Until 1972 Anubis played pubs, clubs, and universities around the country, becoming regulars at JB's in Dudley and the Lafayette in Wolverhampton. During this time they supported many big names, including:- Black Sabbath, Status Quo, Gary Moore, Mott The Hoople, Barclay James Harvest, and Lindisfarne.
With the demise of Anubis, he filled time in and out of bands until joining 'Gasoline' in 1976. They played reworked covers and original material, concentrating on the college circuit until splitting up to follow other careers in the early eighties.
Phil meantime, took advantage of a summer break to play in a Bavarian Um-Pah band in the Isle of Man. It was a complete change of style (and an interesting experience!) demonstrating his open minded approach and versatility. However, the eighties music scene proved to be disillusioning for Phil. He kept a low profile during this time, playing across a diverse spectrum of style, but never settling on one. He played Country and Western, Rock, Blues and Pop until 'Crossfire' was born. This ill-fated band entertained the fans in local pubs with covers of Stevie Ray Vaughn and similar for a couple of years.
Ultimately, Phil's needs for a stable, solid band re-surfaced and together with Barry Anderson from 'Gasoline' and 'Crossfire' and Colin Hughes, the mighty Barrelhouse Blues Band was formed in 1992, the line up has proved durable and given Phil the outlet for his talents.
He has earned his spurs and proved himself to be a dynamic, powerful drummer, not afraid to branch out and be innovative, but remaining the powerhouse of the band.
